Warner Photography

Montana's Best Black & White Images

Montana photographer, John H. Warner, records the life and land to which he is connected through family, work, and art.

A self-taught photographer who has been involved in making images since boyhood. John's work is exclusively in black and white. Many are hand-colored or manipulated with color. These hand-colored images have become the signature work for which he is becoming well known. The subject of his work focuses on rural Montana, rodeos and ranch life. These seemingly ordinary events are given a new perspective from his camera lens. The art of freelance photography often hinges on anticipation and timing to record the "moment" all without infringing upon the subject's sense of privacy and dignity.

Prints

All black and white prints are personally printed and signed by myself- John H. Warner. Hand Coloring of the prints are done one at time. Each of them is one of a kind and two of them are never the same because of the application and embellishment of the color. Black and White prints are done on RC paper unless ordered otherwise. Hand Colored photographs are printed on Fiber Paper. All prints are made to meet archival standards. Print sizes may vary depending on print and maximum appeal. Our lab is a “two horse operation” run by my wife and me; between irrigating and putting up hay in the summer, and feeding livestock in the winter. We know you will like my product; hopefully you will pass the word around.

Negatives

I have an extensive file of my own negatives that cover many years of shooting. I also have several collections of old negatives from deceased photographers of Montana. If you have an interest in seeing them, let me know and we can make arrangements for you to view them.

Shows

Lastly, we do about 4 to 5 shows a year and maybe one might be in your area.

Workshop Backdrop

This is a Workshop for those who want to get away from your surroundings and spend time seeing what rural Montana is all about, while learning the techniques of taking pictures and processing Black and White Photography.

Workshop Location

Our ranch is located about 30 miles west of Great Falls, Montana. We are situated right under the famous Square Butte which is a well known landmark in central Montana. Charles Russell, a well-known oil painter from this area, depicted the Butte in many of his paintings. About 40 miles to the West is the Rocky Mountain Front, which runs all the way to Canada. Our place is considered a small working ranch by Montana standards. We raise cattle, sheep, and have a haying operation. My wife Diana and I have owned and operated the ranch for many years. Our three girls are all grown up and have their own families and busy lives.

Workshop Goals

Hopefully, I can help you with your goal of being a successful Black and White Photographer. We have a great setting here at our ranch and surrounding area for outstanding images of Montana and the West. You do not have to have knowledge of Black and White Photography, just a desire to learn.

Who I Am

I have spent 28 years in the Education field here in Montana. Teaching Art was my job during that time. Black and White Photography was a major part of my teaching. View the Gallery for examples of my work. I feel well qualified and with your desire to learn, “what more could we ask for”.

Our Workshops are a Great Way to Spend Time in Montana
